Custom RTX 5090 Mod Splits 12VHPWR Power Input

A new custom add-on board for the RTX 5090 enhances safety by splitting power across three inputs to reduce connector temperatures.

Redditor u/DallasGrave has developed a custom add-on board for the RTX 5090 designed to modify the 12VHPWR connector. This hardware modification attaches directly to the header, splitting power across three separate inputs rather than relying on a single source.

The modification utilizes two standard 8-pin PCIe connectors for auxiliary power. During a 48-hour stress test at a 550W load, each input carried 3A while wire temperatures remained below 40°C. The RTX 5090 features 32GB of GDDR7 VRAM for high-end performance.

To further enhance safety, a developer released an open-source tool for ASUS Astral RTX 5090 variants. This software monitors power draw and automatically shuts down the PC if it detects excessive levels, complementing the physical hardware modifications.
