GTA2 RTX Remix Mod Adds Path Tracing to Classic

Modder gebdag releases an open-source project bringing dynamic lighting and 60 FPS support to the 1999 classic Grand Theft Auto 2.

Modder gebdag has released GTA2 RTX Remix, an open-source project that brings full path tracing to the 1999 classic Grand Theft Auto 2. By leveraging Nvidia RTX Remix technology, the mod introduces dynamic time-of-day cycles and modern lighting to the title.

To enable compatibility, the modder developed a custom Direct3D 9 renderer using two specific DLL files, bypassing the game's original DirectDraw roots. It supports 16:9 widescreen displays, 60 FPS via Frame Generation, and fixes legacy sprite pop-in issues.

The mod requires a 64-bit Windows OS and the free 9.6 version of the game released by Rockstar in 2004. This project joins a growing list of RTX Remix enhancements for retro titles like Max Payne, Tomb Raider, and The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind on GitHub.
