# Linux Kernel 7.4 to Boost AMD APU Performance

October 3, 2026 at 01:37 PM

> The upcoming Linux 7.4 kernel introduces PerfOpt to bypass IOMMU, delivering significant performance gains for AMD Strix Halo devices.

The [Linux kernel](<https://hardwarebrief.com/entity/linux-kernel-q14579>) 7.4 release, expected in late October or early November, introduces HDMI support for Variable Refresh Rate and FreeSync. A key addition is the **PerfOpt** patch, which allows privileged I/O devices to bypass the [IOMMU](<https://hardwarebrief.com/entity/input-output-memory-management-unit-q469599>) for memory access.

PerfOpt, or Performance Optimization, enables integrated GPUs to bypass GPA to SPA translations while maintaining IR/IW permission bits. Drivers must opt into this; the amdgpu driver supports it in identity mode, though a manual override can disable it.

This optimization significantly reduces system overhead. Phoronix testing on [AMD](<https://hardwarebrief.com/entity/amd-q128896>) **Strix Halo** APUs showed local LLM performance gains of 18-23%. Such improvements are critical for AMD-powered handhelds like the Valve Steam Deck and future integrated chips.
