# Macronix Scales Back ROM Production for Nintendo

November 4, 2026 at 04:51 PM

> Macronix CEO Miin Wu confirms a reduction in ROM output, potentially shifting Nintendo's Switch 2 toward digital and Game-Key Card models.

**Macronix** CEO **Miin Wu** confirmed in late October 2026 that the company is gradually scaling back its ROM production. As a major chip supplier for **Nintendo**'s cartridges, this shift marks a significant change in the supply chain for the gaming giant's hardware.

Industry analyst **David Gibson** noted on October 4, 2026, that this withdrawal could accelerate a shift toward digital releases and Game-Key Cards for the Switch 2. These cards contain a download key rather than a physical game, offering a hybrid distribution model.

While Nintendo has not commented on the scale-back, the company previously stated it has no plans to abandon physical media. Macronix is not Nintendo's only supplier, but the move follows **PlayStation**'s confirmed trajectory toward a digital-only future.
