New Driver Brings USB4 Support to Windows 98

Developer Yeo Kheng Meng releases xHCI98 v3.0.0.0, enabling USB4 and Thunderbolt support for legacy Windows OS using AI-assisted coding.

Developer Yeo Kheng Meng has released xHCI98 v3.0.0.0, an experimental driver bringing and 3 and 4 support to legacy Windows systems. The software enables generic host controllers to function on , ME, 2000, XP, Vista, and 7.

The project includes xhciuas.sys for USB Attached SCSI storage and xhcicm.sys for Thunderbolt and USB4 docks or NVMe enclosures. Tested on a 2020 ThinkPad P14s Gen 1 with Comet Lake xHCI, the driver replaces native Windows USB port and hub driver stacks.

This release facilitates connecting USB 1.1, 2.0, and SuperSpeed devices to modern hardware. Development involved AI tools, utilizing Claude Fable 5.1 for planning, Claude Opus 5.5 for coding, and Codex GPT 6 Astra as an adversarial reviewer for the code.
