A Radeon RX 7900 XTX owner reported significant overheating damage to the 8-pin connectors on a Thermal Grizzly WireView monitoring device. The user experienced frequent system freezes and black screens before discovering melted plastic on the GPU adapter.
Thermal Grizzly has contacted the user to investigate the failure. The company previously noted that improper seating, backplate interference, or misaligned soldered contacts can cause damage, though the user claims the connectors were fully inserted.
This incident highlights power delivery risks as hardware demands rise. While this RX 7900 XTX failed, a modified RTX 5090 recently pulled 900W at 3,400 MHz using three 8-pin connectors soldered to the PCB, showing the extreme limits of current GPU power.
