Sony Transfers 43 XR Patents to Meta

Sony completes the transfer of 43 U.S. patents to Meta as part of a larger global deal involving virtual and mixed reality technologies.

Sony transferred 43 United States patents to Meta between June and September 2026, focusing on virtual, augmented, and mixed reality technologies. These filings cover head-mount displays and XR glass types developed by Sony teams between 2010 and 2022.

This move is part of a larger agreement to transfer 419 global patents to Meta. While 180 are U.S.-based, 239 originate from Japan, China, Korea, and Europe. Sony maintains active research and development teams across these international territories today.

The deal follows the 2023 launch of the PSVR 2 for PlayStation 5 and Pro consoles. Originally a console exclusive, Sony recently expanded the headset's utility by introducing a PC adapter, signaling a shift in their long-term hardware ecosystem strategy.
