> Sony completes the transfer of 43 U.S. patents to Meta as part of a larger global deal involving virtual and mixed reality technologies.

[Sony](<https://hardwarebrief.com/entity/sony-q41187>) transferred 43 [United States](<https://hardwarebrief.com/entity/united-states-q30>) patents to [Meta](<https://hardwarebrief.com/entity/meta-platforms-q380>) between June and September 2026, focusing on virtual, augmented, and mixed reality technologies. These filings cover head-mount displays and XR glass types developed by Sony teams between 2010 and 2022.

This move is part of a larger agreement to transfer 419 global patents to Meta. While 180 are U.S.-based, 239 originate from Japan, China, Korea, and Europe. Sony maintains active research and development teams across these international territories today.

The deal follows the 2023 launch of the [PSVR 2](<https://hardwarebrief.com/entity/playstation-vr2-q107944338>) for [PlayStation 5](<https://hardwarebrief.com/entity/playstation-5-q63184502>) and Pro consoles. Originally a console exclusive, Sony recently expanded the headset's utility by introducing a PC adapter, signaling a shift in their long-term hardware ecosystem strategy.
