Intel Larrabee Prototype Restored to Run Crysis

A rare Intel Larrabee GPU prototype has been successfully restored by a hobbyist to run Crysis at 720p using original development files.

Reddit user pkellythompson has successfully restored 3D acceleration to an prototype found in a storage auction. The hardware, part of an Intel Visual Adrenaline system, features a C0 stepping sample, a DX58SO motherboard, and a diagnostic board.

The recovery utilized two USB drives containing Intel development software, drivers, and VBIOS instructions now uploaded to the . After adjusting BIOS settings and using DVI, the prototype ran at 720p, reaching 36 FPS with new drivers.

Originally detailed in 2008 to challenge NVIDIA and AMD, Larrabee used x86 cores before its 2009 consumer cancellation. While the project later evolved into accelerators, these restored files provide a rare look at Intel's early dedicated GPU efforts.
