Intel Shifts 18A Capacity to Data Center Chips

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan warns of PC market challenges as the company reallocates 18A production capacity from consumer to data center nodes.

CEO warned of a challenging PC market ahead as the company shifts 18A capacity from to data center chips. To accommodate Intel 3 in Oregon, 18A wafers are being taken offline, impacting the rollout of consumer chip families.

While Panther Lake has ramped on the 18A node, the cost-optimized Wildcat Lake client CPU is currently sold out with demand outstripping supply. Sequential units rose 70%, but Intel faces substrate supply constraints affecting the internal CCPG gaming group.

The CCPG group expects a sequential decline exceeding 20% amid these production shifts. Following the announcement, Intel's share price dropped 23% in after-hours trading as the firm prioritizes Clearwater Forest chips for its corporate data center clients.
