Intel and AMD Form x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group

Intel and AMD collaborate to strengthen the x86 ecosystem through shared standards and manufacturing advancements like the 18A process.

and have officially established the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group as of October 2024. During a fireside chat on October 24, Intel's and AMD's discussed expanding cooperation, which already includes integrating ZenDNN optimizations into Intel's open-source oneDNN library for improved CPU software and x86 standards.

Intel is advancing its roadmap with the 18A manufacturing process reaching volume production. The company also released version 0.5 of the 14A process design kit, with version 1.0 targeted for volume production in early 2027. Currently, Intel is developing new Xeon processors, GPUs, and accelerators while two customers evaluate 14A test chips.

The strategic shift focuses on ASICs, co-packaged optics, physical AI, and advanced packaging. Lip-Bu Tan aims for two or three of these emerging growth areas to each contribute roughly 10% of Intel's total revenue. This collaboration and technical expansion represent a significant move to strengthen the x86 ecosystem against competitors.
