Nvidia and PreussenElektra to Study AI Sites

Nvidia and PreussenElektra partner to explore converting decommissioned German nuclear power plant sites into high-performance AI data centers.

and German energy firm entered a preliminary partnership on October 21st to explore converting decommissioned nuclear power plant sites into AI data centers. The initiative focuses on repurposing existing industrial infrastructure.

The feasibility phase will assess energy grid links, available land, and water resources at sites currently being dismantled. PreussenElektra is responsible for eight of the roughly 30 plants has shut down since exiting nuclear power in April 2023.

While no investment amounts or construction agreements are finalized, the project aims to leverage established industrial footprints for high-performance computing. Notably, the plan utilizes the sites' infrastructure rather than active nuclear power generation.
