A Chinese repair center recently received seven GPUs with melted 12+4-pin power interfaces in just two days. According to the YouTube channel Zhang the Computer Repairman, the damaged hardware includes RTX 4090 and the new RTX 5090 Founders Edition.
The affected units from Asus, MSI, and Gainward exhibited burned sockets and blackened PCBs. Zhang noted that failing cards often show a voltage drop to 11.3V in GPU-Z. Repairs involved cleaning contacts and soldering new sockets before 3DMark testing.
These failures, affecting both lab and consumer systems, highlight ongoing power delivery risks for high-end GPUs. While Zhang successfully restored the cards, has now released an OCP dongle to provide early warnings for potential power issues.
