AMD's Adrenalin 26.9.2 Windows driver has revealed a new codename, Gainsborough, alongside reports that partners lack information on the Medusa architecture. Recent shipping logs from Asia show test equipment for Gainsborough utilizing a BGA FF6 socket.
The discovery follows Valve's confirmation of a Steam Deck 2. Leaker Kepler_L2 noted that Gainsborough completes the name of Final Fantasy VII character Aerith Gainsborough, which was the codename for the custom SoC found in the original Steam Deck OLED model.
Valve aims for a significant generational leap, targeting a performance increase well beyond 50 percent without compromising battery life. While the driver is for Windows, the link to the Aerith codename suggests Gainsborough is the next Steam Deck chip.
