Linux Kernel 7.4 to Boost AMD APU Performance

The upcoming Linux 7.4 kernel introduces PerfOpt to bypass IOMMU, delivering significant performance gains for AMD Strix Halo devices.

The Linux kernel 7.4 release, expected in late October or early November, introduces HDMI support for Variable Refresh Rate and FreeSync. A key addition is the PerfOpt patch, which allows privileged I/O devices to bypass the IOMMU for memory access.

PerfOpt, or Performance Optimization, enables integrated GPUs to bypass GPA to SPA translations while maintaining IR/IW permission bits. Drivers must opt into this; the amdgpu driver supports it in identity mode, though a manual override can disable it.

This optimization significantly reduces system overhead. Phoronix testing on AMD Strix Halo APUs showed local LLM performance gains of 18-23%. Such improvements are critical for AMD-powered handhelds like the Valve Steam Deck and future integrated chips.
