Tesla Reduces Memory Specs for AI5 and AI6 Chips

Elon Musk announces a one-third memory reduction for Tesla's next-generation AI chips powering FSD and the Optimus humanoid robot.

Elon Musk has announced a memory specification reduction for Tesla's upcoming AI5 and AI6 chips. The AI5 chip now features 72 GB of LPDDR5 memory, while the AI6 is expected to include 144 GB of LPDDR6, representing a decrease of approximately one-third.

The AI5 chip, built on a 2nm node by TSMC and Samsung, offers 2000-2500 TOPS and a half-reticle size. Trial production is underway at Samsung's Texas facility, with volume production set for 2027 to power Tesla's FSD stack and the Optimus humanoid robot.

Musk stated these changes will not impact Optimus performance, despite Micron's estimate that robots need 200 GB of DRAM. The AI6 will utilize SRAM for half its accelerators, while the AI5's dual-chip setup remains comparable to NVIDIA's Blackwell GPUs.
