Raspberry Pi has implemented firmware locks that restrict boards to their original factory RAM capacities. Engineer and Forum Moderator PhilE confirmed the company has been locking devices to their original RAM size for some time to ensure device reliability.
The firmware programs in specific device attributes that may prevent switching RAM parts even if they are the same size. PhilE stated this removes the commercial incentive for resellers to swap low-capacity RAM for higher-capacity chips of dubious origin.
Users are advised not to attempt RAM repairs or upgrades as they will not work due to these updates starting in late 2024. Tech expert Jeff Geerling suggested a warranty bit or one-time firmware flag as a potential alternative to the current hardware block.
