Open-Source Driver Renders Windows 11 Using NPU

The labscommunity group has released a prototype driver that offloads Windows 11 desktop rendering from the GPU to a Neural Processing Unit.

Developer group labscommunity has released npu-driver, an open-source prototype for that renders the desktop using a Neural Processing Unit instead of a GPU. Available on under , it was tested on NPU 5 systems.

The driver currently achieves a screen refresh speed of 2 to 3 Hz, though developers aim for a 30 Hz target. It features a fallback mechanism that reverts to GPU rendering upon request or fault, ensuring stability during this early research prototype phase.

By shifting tasks to the 45-50 TOPS NPU, the project reduced 3D GPU usage from 3.4% to 0.6% in one test case. This experiment highlights the potential for offloading basic OS interface tasks to specialized silicon to improve overall system power efficiency.
