RTX 5090 Mod Replaces 12V-2x6 with Quad 8-Pin

A modder has developed a prototype PCB that replaces the RTX 5090 power connector with four 8-pin headers to improve thermal performance.

Reddit user DallasGrave has developed a prototype modification for the , replacing the standard 12V-2x6 plug with four 8-pin PCIe connectors. Reported by HKEPC on October 18, this Quad 2x8 Header Conversion uses a custom soldered PCB.

The setup utilizes twelve 12V conductors compared to the six found in standard 16-pin cables. At 600W, the modder measured 4.1 to 4.4A per conductor, significantly below the 9.5A rating. Signaling ensures the card recognizes the full power availability.

This modification reportedly runs 20°C cooler than the original connector. While a custom backplate is currently in development, no retail price or release date has been announced for the conversion kit, which remains in the functional prototype stage.
